'I Am' in the Gala Final of Short+Sweet Dubai 2013

'I Am' makes it to the Gala Final of Short+Sweet Dubai 2013 as the WINNER of the people's choice vote for Top 20 Week 1. It also tied for the Runner-Up position in the Judges' vote.

Do come and support Short+Sweet over the next weekend. The Gala Final, of course, is not to be missed as it will feature the 10 best plays from over 50 plays running in the festival.

The cast of 'I Am'

There are two shows for the Final, 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday 2nd March at DUCTAC, Mall of the Emirates.

A BIG thank you to everyone who supported us over the last weekend. This wouldn't have been possible without YOU!

A special shout-out to all the participants in Short+Sweet. The festival has truly opened our eyes to the infinite possibilities and the unending reserves of talent in our little Oasis in the desert.

On a personal note, I must thank the cast and crew for their ceaseless efforts in making every outing of Third Half Theatre thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding. Every bit counts and it is the sum of the efforts of the entire team behind the scenes that helps our cast when they are on stage.

This play has been quite different from most of our previous productions and that is chiefly due to the belief, passion, and sincere committment shown by the cast. There is some magic here that I cannot, and dare not, explain.

I Am

Third Half Theatre is proud to present their next original production ‘I Am’ for the first Dubai edition of the world’s largest festival of ten minute plays: Short+Sweet.

After the success of our last original production ‘Garçon’ and the overwhelming positive feedback it continues to receive, we are indeed very fortunate to be pioneering the movement for locally produced original theatre in Dubai along with other like-minded theatre aficionados.

The Short+Sweet festival will run over two weekends from 21st February till the 2nd of March 2013. There are over 50 plays to choose from and quite a few of them are original productions.

Our play is billed in the Top 20 Week 1, and will be staged at 8:00 p.m. on 21st, 22nd and 23rd February, 2013 at the Kilachand Theatre, DUCTAC, Mall of the Emirates.

Garçon

The third play featured in our Emax Evening at the Theatre at The Fridge Dubai, is Garçon. 

The device and structure of Garçon has been with me for a good part of a decade now, and the writing of it has been begun several times, but never progressed beyond a couple of pages here and there. And then one day all the disparate elements fell in place in one sitting. It is difficult to express the range of emotions one feels when something that has been in your head for so long suddenly finds life through others. 

Can't wait for the actors to make the play their own!

The Monkey's Paw

The second play featured in our Emax Evening at the Theatre kicking off tonight at The Fridge Dubai, is The Monkey's Paw.

This short story by W.W. Jacobs has been a favorite of mine for a while now and I was waiting for an opportunity to showcase it on stage or film. Considering it was written in 1902, the sheer impact it generates simply in the telling is evidence of its place in the pantheon of true classics.

The Monkey's Paw is a chilling tale of fate and retribution. A talisman that purports to grant its owner three wishes seems to be a wild yarn at first; but be warned, the last owner's third wish was for death.

A Tragedian In Spite of Himself

As promised, our Emax Evening at the Theatre kicks off tonight at The Fridge, Alserkal Avenue, Dubai. The evening will feature three English short plays, the first of which is Chekhov's "A Tragedian In Spite of Himself".

Anton Chekhov needs no introduction and is a firm favorite of all theatre lovers.  So when I was looking for a play to feature in this production, the first thing I did was go through his body of work. And the task set by the playwright for the actors in The Tragedian In Spite Of Himself made the play difficult to resist.

A farce played out as a mock tragedy, the humorous short both plays up, and underlines the inherent tragic-comedy in everyday life.

An Evening at the Theatre

We’ve taken a bit of a break after the exhilaration that was Noises Off, but we’re back!

Third Half Theatre will present three short plays in English, come November end in Dubai.
